Okinawa Main Island Travel Guide: Regions, Highlights & Tips

The Okinawa Main Island (Okinawa Honto) is the largest island in the prefecture and the heart of Okinawan life. Stretching more than 100 km (62 mi) from south to north, it packs in a busy capital, resort beaches, UNESCO-listed castle ruins, WWII memorials, and a protected subtropical forest.

Most visitors fly into Naha Airport and spend at least part of their trip here. This guide introduces the island’s four main regions and helps you decide how to divide your time.

What the Main Island Is Like

The south and center of the island are the most built-up, with Naha and its neighboring cities running into one another and a large US military presence in the central area. Head north past Nago and the landscape changes: towns thin out, mountains rise, and the road winds along a wild, rocky coast backed by forest.

That variety is the Main Island’s great strength. In a single day you can visit a royal castle, swim at a white-sand beach, and eat dinner in a lively city neighborhood. It also means planning helps: traffic around Naha can be slow, and the north is a long drive from the airport, so grouping sights by region will save you time.

How Long to Spend

Trip lengthSuggested split
2–3 daysNaha and Shuri, plus a day in the south or a day up the west coast
4–5 daysTwo nights in Naha, two or three nights on the central west coast, with a day trip north
6–7 daysAdd a night in Motobu or Yanbaru, or a side trip to the Kerama Islands

Getting Around the Main Island

The Yui Rail monorail covers Naha and its neighbor Urasoe, and buses run across the island. But to explore the coast, the north, and the south at your own pace, a rental car is by far the easiest option.

The Okinawa Expressway runs about 57 km (35 mi) from Naha to Kyoda in Nago, speeding up trips to the north. Route 58, the main west-coast road, is scenic but can be slow in traffic. Typical drive times from Naha Airport include:

Where to Stay

For a first trip, many visitors split their stay between Naha, for food, transport, and nightlife, and the central west coast, from Chatan to Onna, for beaches. Families often add Motobu to be near the aquarium, while the south suits travelers who want quiet sea views close to the airport. Compare areas in where to stay in Okinawa.

When to Go

The Main Island is warm year-round. April, late June to early July, and October are excellent all-round months. The rainy season usually runs from around mid-May to late June, and typhoons are possible from roughly June to October. See the best time to visit Okinawa.

Frequently Asked Questions

How big is Okinawa Main Island?

It’s more than 100 km (62 mi) long from south to north, but narrow, so the coast is never far away. Driving from Naha Airport to the northern tip takes around 2.5 hours.

Do I need a car on Okinawa Main Island?

Not for Naha, but a car makes it far easier to explore the rest of the island.

What is the best area to stay on the Main Island?

Naha for convenience, the Chatan–Onna coast for beaches, and Motobu for the aquarium and the north.

Can I visit the outer islands from the Main Island?

Yes. Ferries from Naha’s Tomari Port reach the Kerama Islands, and flights from Naha Airport go to Miyako, Ishigaki, and other islands.
