Sample Trip Lengths

3–4 days: base yourself on the Main Island. Spend a day in Naha and Shuri, a day in the south, and a day or two on the west coast and the Motobu Peninsula.

5–7 days: add a night or two on Zamami or Tokashiki in the Kerama Islands, or fly to Miyako or Ishigaki for beaches and island hopping.

10 days or more: combine the Main Island with one or two outer island groups. Inter-island flights make this easy, but allow for weather delays in typhoon season.

Quick Planning Tips

  • Decide how many islands you’ll visit. The Main Island, the Kerama Islands, Miyako, and the Yaeyama Islands each deserve time. Two bases is plenty for a first week.
  • Book early for Japanese holidays. Golden Week (late April to early May), the summer holidays, and Obon fill flights, hotels, and rental cars quickly.
  • Plan for typhoon season. From roughly June to October, leave a spare day before international flights and consider travel insurance.
  • Sort out your driving permit before you leave home. If you plan to rent a car, you’ll need the correct international driving permit or official translation.
  • Mix beach days with culture. Castles, sacred sites, markets, and WWII memorials make great half-day trips, especially on cloudy days.
  • Pack for the sun. A hat, rash guard, and reef-friendly sunscreen are useful for much of the year.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many days do I need in Okinawa?

Four to five days is enough to enjoy the highlights of the Main Island. With a week or more, you can add an outer island such as Zamami, Miyako, or Ishigaki.

Do I need a car in Okinawa?

Not in central Naha, where the monorail and taxis work well. To explore the rest of the Main Island, Miyako, or Ishigaki, a rental car makes life much easier.

Is Okinawa expensive?

It can be busy and pricey in peak holiday periods, but outside those dates there is good value at every budget, from guesthouses to resorts.
