line-height: 200%;\">Kings Satto and Bunei<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0mm 0mm 0pt; line-height: 200%;\" class=\"MsoPlainText\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" mso-fareast-font-family:=\"\" mso-bidi-font-size:=\"\" antiqua=\"\" book=\"\" style=\"font-size: 12pt; line-height: 200%;\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\" ar-sa=\"\" mso-bidi-language:=\"\" mso-fareast-language:=\"\" mso-ansi-language:=\"\" mso-font-kerning:=\"\" roman=\"\" new=\"\" times=\"\" mso-bidi-font-family:=\"\" mso-fareast-font-family:=\"\" antiqua=\"\" book=\"\" style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Satto, at age 29 in 1350, accepted the will of the people, and became king.<span style=\"\">  <\/span>In 1372, King Satto sent his brother Taiki to <\/span><st1:country-region><st1:place><span lang=\"EN-US\" ar-sa=\"\" mso-bidi-language:=\"\" mso-fareast-language:=\"\" mso-ansi-language:=\"\" mso-font-kerning:=\"\" roman=\"\" new=\"\" times=\"\" mso-bidi-font-family:=\"\" mso-fareast-font-family:=\"\" antiqua=\"\" book=\"\" style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">China<\/span><\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region><span lang=\"EN-US\" ar-sa=\"\" mso-bidi-language:=\"\" mso-fareast-language:=\"\" mso-ansi-language:=\"\" mso-font-kerning:=\"\" roman=\"\" new=\"\" times=\"\" mso-bidi-font-family:=\"\" mso-fareast-font-family:=\"\" antiqua=\"\" book=\"\" style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">, beginning a lucrative tributary relationship with the Ming emperor.<\/span><br \/><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0mm 0mm 0pt; line-height: 200%;\" class=\"MsoPlainText\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" mso-fareast-font-family:=\"\" mso-bidi-font-size:=\"\" antiqua=\"\" book=\"\" style=\"font-size: 12pt; line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"\"> <\/span>Trade with <\/span><st1:country-region><st1:place><span lang=\"EN-US\" mso-fareast-font-family:=\"\" mso-bidi-font-size:=\"\" antiqua=\"\" book=\"\" style=\"font-size: 12pt; line-height: 200%;\">Korea<\/span><\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region><span lang=\"EN-US\" mso-fareast-font-family:=\"\" mso-bidi-font-size:=\"\" antiqua=\"\" book=\"\" style=\"font-size: 12pt; line-height: 200%;\"> and the European powers soon followed.<span style=\"\">  <\/span>In 1389, he sent the very first group of exchange students to <\/span><st1:country-region><st1:place><span lang=\"EN-US\" mso-fareast-font-family:=\"\" mso-bidi-font-size:=\"\" antiqua=\"\" book=\"\" style=\"font-size: 12pt; line-height: 200%;\">China<\/span><\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region><span lang=\"EN-US\" mso-fareast-font-family:=\"\" mso-bidi-font-size:=\"\" antiqua=\"\" book=\"\" style=\"font-size: 12pt; line-height: 200%;\">&rsquo;s premier educational institution, Kokushikan.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0mm 0mm 0pt; line-height: 200%;\" class=\"MsoPlainText\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" mso-fareast-font-family:=\"\" mso-bidi-font-size:=\"\" antiqua=\"\" book=\"\" style=\"font-size: 12pt; line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"\">              <\/span>Wanting to benefit from the vast technical and cultural wealth of knowledge that the Chinese possessed, King Satto made a formal request the Chinese emperor for advisers.<span style=\"\">  <\/span>To answer the call of the Ryukyus, the Emperor sent what would come to be known as the 36 families.<span style=\"\">  <\/span>These specialists settled in the <\/span><st1:place><st1:placetype><span lang=\"EN-US\" mso-fareast-font-family:=\"\" mso-bidi-font-size:=\"\" antiqua=\"\" book=\"\" style=\"font-size: 12pt; line-height: 200%;\">village<\/span><\/st1:placetype><span lang=\"EN-US\" mso-fareast-font-family:=\"\" mso-bidi-font-size:=\"\" antiqua=\"\" book=\"\" style=\"font-size: 12pt; line-height: 200%;\"> of <\/span><st1:placename><span lang=\"EN-US\" mso-fareast-font-family:=\"\" mso-bidi-font-size:=\"\" antiqua=\"\" book=\"\" style=\"font-size: 12pt; line-height: 200%;\">Kume<\/span><\/st1:placename><\/st1:place><span lang=\"EN-US\" mso-fareast-font-family:=\"\" mso-bidi-font-size:=\"\" antiqua=\"\" book=\"\" style=\"font-size: 12pt; line-height: 200%;\">; at the time, an island west of Mawashi town(current <\/span><st1:city><st1:place><span lang=\"EN-US\" mso-fareast-font-family:=\"\" mso-bidi-font-size:=\"\" antiqua=\"\" book=\"\" style=\"font-size: 12pt; line-height: 200%;\">Naha<\/span><\/st1:place><\/st1:city><span lang=\"EN-US\" mso-fareast-font-family:=\"\" mso-bidi-font-size:=\"\" antiqua=\"\" book=\"\" style=\"font-size: 12pt; line-height: 200%;\">) separated by the Kumoji and Kokuba rivers.<span style=\"\">  <\/span>Over time, the advancements of technology and culture helped to increase the relative power and influence of the <\/span><st1:place><st1:placename><span lang=\"EN-US\" mso-fareast-font-family:=\"\" mso-bidi-font-size:=\"\" antiqua=\"\" book=\"\" style=\"font-size: 12pt; line-height: 200%;\">Chuzan<\/span><\/st1:placename><span lang=\"EN-US\" mso-fareast-font-family:=\"\" mso-bidi-font-size:=\"\" antiqua=\"\" book=\"\" style=\"font-size: 12pt; line-height: 200%;\"> <\/span><st1:placetype><span lang=\"EN-US\" mso-fareast-font-family:=\"\" mso-bidi-font-size:=\"\" antiqua=\"\" book=\"\" style=\"font-size: 12pt; line-height: 200%;\">Kingdom<\/span><\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place><span lang=\"EN-US\" mso-fareast-font-family:=\"\" mso-bidi-font-size:=\"\" antiqua=\"\" book=\"\" style=\"font-size: 12pt; line-height: 200%;\">.<span style=\"\">  <\/span>So much so, that the Miyako and Yaeyama archipelagos were added to the kingdom in 1390.<span style=\"\">  <\/span>Five years later, after helping the Middle Kingdom rebound, at the age of 75, King Satto died, leaving the throne to his legitimate heir, Bunei.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0mm 0mm 0pt; line-height: 200%;\" class=\"MsoPlainText\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" mso-fareast-font-family:=\"\" mso-bidi-font-size:=\"\" antiqua=\"\" book=\"\" style=\"font-size: 12pt; line-height: 200%;\"><span style=\"\">              <\/span>The new king of Chuzan increased the trade agreement with China from once every two years up to 2 and 3 times, annually;<span style=\"\">  <\/span>a 400~600% increase.<span style=\"\">  <\/span>The Emperor valued the Ryukyuan wares to an extent that he exchanged in return items worth 50 to 100 times over the cost of said Ryukyuan goods. In 1403, a special Import &ndash; Export island named, OmonoGusuku, became designated to handle international transactions, including storage of said goods.<span style=\"\">  <\/span>Although King Bunei&rsquo;s foreign policy was very sound, profitable and in the model of his father, he tended to forget completely the domestic side to the equation.<span style=\"\">  <\/span>For all the extravagance that the Kings wealth afforded himself, his subjects lived in a stark contrast of poverty and suffering.<span style=\"\">  <\/span>When council was offered to change his ways, it was ignored.<span style=\"\">  <\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0mm 0mm 0pt; line-height: 200%;\" class=\"MsoPlainText\"><strong style=\"\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" mso-fareast-font-family:=\"\" mso-bidi-font-size:=\"\" antiqua=\"\" book=\"\" style=\"font-size: 12pt; line-height: 200%;\">In part <\/span><\/strong><strong style=\"\"><span antiqua=\"\" book=\"\" mso-hansi-font-family:=\"\" mso-ascii-font-family:=\"\" mso-bidi-font-size:=\"\" style=\"font-size: 12pt; line-height: 200%;\">&#9317;<\/span><\/strong><strong style=\"\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" mso-fareast-font-family:=\"\" mso-bidi-font-size:=\"\" antiqua=\"\" book=\"\" style=\"font-size: 12pt; line-height: 200%;\">, Chuzan falls to Hashi<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kings Satto and Bunei Satto, at age 29 in 1350, accepted the will of the people, and became king.
