These 9 UNESCO designated World Heritage sites on Okinawa give us insight into the Ryukyuan civilization that prospered between the end of the 14th century to the end of the 18th century.

1. Shurijo Castle.
\nCarefully restored Shurijo Castle attracts visitors from around the world. It sits high upon a hill in central Naha. Its impressive white Okinawan limestone walls contrast with the vermillion Seiden and gilt dragons curl on the rooftops. One can tour the Seiden (Main Hall) and stroll throughout the castle grounds. Cultural music and dance performances are frequently held in the central courtyard.<\/p>\n
2. Sonohyan-utaki Ishimon
\nThe beautifully restored stone gateway of the Sonohyan Shrine is all that remains of this sacred Utaki.<\/p>\n
3. Tamaudun
\nThe Royal Mausoleum of Tamaudun, built in 1501, is the final resting ground to the kings of the second Sho dynasty.<\/p>\n
4. Shikinaen
\nThe beautiful Royal Gardens at Shikinaen offer the visitor serene Ryukyuan atmosphere. A pond is central to this garden.<\/p>\n
5. Nakijinjo Castle Remains
\nThe Castle remains of Nakijinjo overlook the East China Sea.<\/p>\n
6. Nakagusukujo Castle Remains
\nThe castle remains of Nakagusukujo provide the visitor a chance to explore some of the more intact structural remains of the Ryukyu Kingdom.<\/p>\n
7. Zakimijo Castle Remains
\nA valuable example of Okinawa style “aikatazumi,” or stone piling. Arch shaped Okinawan limestone gates connecting two immense curved limestone walls still stand at this site.<\/p>\n
8. Sefa-utaki
\nThe sacred ground of the creator goddess, Amamikyo. One can see Kudaka Island from this sacrad utaki.<\/p>\n
9. Katsurenjo Castle Remains
