This is a poem I composed to express the feeling of summer days in Okinawa.<\/p>\n
Drops of sweat glisten in the sun,
\nTrickling down flushed-out cheeks.
\nLike rain-wash in a stony crag,
\nMoisture flows and humidity peaks.<\/p>\n
The stickiness of summer pervades
\nThe body like a painful prick
\nCicadae sing their stridulate songs,
\nAd nauseam to make one sick.<\/p>\n
The merciless heat of the season
\nRides your back as you work the field.
\nBurdens the body, smothers the soul,
\nThe sweltering tropics will not yield.<\/p>\n
You’re dripping wet, just sitting still,
\nStifled by the subtropic soak.
\nPray to Buddha for a drying breeze,
\nTo freshen fatigued farming folk.<\/p>\n
With ne’er a breeze to cherish,
\nAt last we see the setting sun.
\nA feeble trek home from the fields,
