{"id":264,"date":"2007-04-24T20:41:06","date_gmt":"2007-04-24T20:41:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.okinawa.com\/blog\/?p=264"},"modified":"2007-04-24T20:41:06","modified_gmt":"2007-04-24T20:41:06","slug":"profiles-of-giants-of-the-ryukyuan-music-performing-arts-a","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.okinawa.com\/blog\/research\/music\/profiles-of-giants-of-the-ryukyuan-music-performing-arts-a","title":{"rendered":"Profiles of Giants of the Ryukyuan Music Performing Arts a"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"margin: 0mm 0mm 0pt; line-height: 200%;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong style=\"\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 12pt; line-height: 200%;\"><font face=\"Century\">Profiles of Giants of the Ryukyuan Music Performing Arts <\/font><\/span><\/strong><strong style=\"\"><span century=\"\" mso-hansi-font-family:=\"\" mso-ascii-font-family:=\"\" &#26126;&#26397;=\"\" style=\"font-size: 12pt; line-height: 200%;\">&#9313;<\/span><\/strong><strong style=\"\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 12pt; line-height: 200%;\"><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0mm 0mm 0pt; line-height: 200%;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Century\"><strong style=\"\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Tansui Uekata<\/span><\/strong><span lang=\"EN-US\"> (1623 &ndash; 1683)<\/span><\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0mm 0mm 0pt; line-height: 200%;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Century\"><span style=\"\">              <\/span>Born in Shuri, at age 15 he became an envoy to Satsuma&rsquo;s court.<span style=\"\">  <\/span>While he was in <st1:city w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">Kagoshima<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>, he excelled at the studies of singing, dancing, and the art of tea.<span style=\"\">  <\/span>These same attributes were promoted for employment in the government of Ryukyu by the policies of Haneji Choshu.<span style=\"\">  <\/span><\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/><span><font face=\"Century\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0mm 0mm 0pt; line-height: 200%;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span><strong>Profiles of Giants of the Ryukyuan Music Performing Arts &#9313;<o:p><\/o:p><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0mm 0mm 0pt; line-height: 200%;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font size=\"3\"><span><strong>Tansui Uekata<\/strong> (1623 &ndash; 1683)<\/span><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0mm 0mm 0pt; line-height: 200%;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><font size=\"3\"><span style=\"\">              <\/span>Born in Shuri, at age 15 he became an envoy to Satsuma&rsquo;s court.<span style=\"\">  <\/span>While he was in <st1:city w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">Kagoshima<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>, he excelled at the studies of singing, dancing, and the art of tea.<span style=\"\">  <\/span>These same attributes were promoted for employment in the government of Ryukyu by the policies of Haneji Choshu.<span style=\"\">  <\/span>He is credited with being the father of Ryukyuan Classical Music.<span style=\"\">  <\/span>He compiled old worship songs, festival tunes as well as agricultural working songs as well as original pieces.<span style=\"\">  <\/span>He was fired because of fraternization with a political enemy of Haneji Choshu.<span style=\"\">  <\/span>It was during this period of extreme poverty that he became a monk and delved deeper into uta-sanshin.<span style=\"\">  <\/span>He in turn brought out the subtle beauty of what came to be known as Ryukyu classical music.<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0mm 0mm 0pt; line-height: 200%;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font size=\"3\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"\">              <\/span>After Haneji Choshu passed on, Tansui Uekata was summoned back to Shuri.<span style=\"\">  <\/span>He was hired as King Sho Tei`s Royal Chief Tea Master. His uta-sanshin legacy became known as Tansui Ryu(style).<span style=\"\">  <\/span>His major students included Tamagusuku Chokun, the father of Kumi Udui, Shinzato Choujuu, and Takushi Ryoutaku.<span style=\"\">  <\/span>The first written copy of Tansui Ryu was not transcribed however until beginning of the Meiji era, by Nago Ryoho.<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 12pt; line-height: 200%;\"> <o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0mm 0mm 0pt;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><o:p><font size=\"3\"> <\/font><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Profiles of Giants of the Ryukyuan Music Performing Arts &#9313; Tansui Uekata (1623 &ndash; 1683) Born in Shuri, at age 15 he became an envoy to Satsuma&rsquo;s court.
