{"id":244,"date":"2006-06-18T00:49:57","date_gmt":"2006-06-18T00:49:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.okinawa.com\/blog\/?p=244"},"modified":"2006-06-18T00:49:57","modified_gmt":"2006-06-18T00:49:57","slug":"heiwadori-public-marketplace","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.okinawa.com\/blog\/travel\/naha-guide\/heiwadori-public-marketplace","title":{"rendered":"Heiwadori Public Marketplace"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Welcome to the Heiwa          Dori (Peace Street)  Machigwa (public          marketplace)! <br \/>\nJust off of Kokusai          Dori          (International Street) exists a  <br \/>\nsprawling shopping          extravaganza.<br \/><!--more--><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><font size=\"7\" face=\"Arial Narrow\" color=\"#8080ff\"><strong>machigwa<\/strong><\/font> <br \/>\n<font size=\"5\" face=\"Arial Narrow\" color=\"#ff99ff\">public  marketplace<\/font> <\/p>\n<div align=\"center\">\n<table width=\"60%\" border=\"1\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.okinawa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/images\/images\/heiwa-sign.JPG\" align=\"images\/heiwa_dori1.JPG\" title=\"images\/heiwa_tsukemono.JPG\" alt=\"images\/heiwa_tsukemono.JPG\"\/><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><font color=\"#000000\"><strong>Welcome to the <\/strong><strong><em>Heiwa          Dori<\/em><\/strong><strong> (Peace Street) <\/strong><\/font> <br \/>\n            <font color=\"#000000\"><strong><em>Machigwa<\/em><\/strong><strong> (public          marketplace)!<\/strong><\/font> <br \/>\n            <font size=\"2\" color=\"#800080\">Just off of <\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/okinawa.com\/kokusai.html\"><font size=\"2\" color=\"#800080\"><strong><em>Kokusai          Dori<\/em><\/strong><\/font><\/a><font size=\"2\" color=\"#800080\"><em>          <\/em>(International Street) exists a <\/font> <br \/>\n            <font size=\"2\" color=\"#800080\">sprawling shopping          extravaganza.<\/font> <\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<p align=\"center\">\n<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.okinawa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/images\/images\/heiwa_dori1.JPG\" align=\"images\/heiwa_tsukemono.JPG\" title=\"images\/heiwa-fugu1.JPG\" alt=\"images\/heiwa-fugu1.JPG\"\/> <br \/>\n<font size=\"2\" color=\"#cc33cc\"><strong>Heiwa Dori<\/strong><\/font><font size=\"2\" color=\"#000000\"> is a bustling indoor, shopping arcade where you will find tourists and Okinawan residents alike shopping for everything from souvenir <\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/okinawa.com\/heiwa_shisa.JPG\"><font size=\"2\" color=\"#000000\"><strong><em>Shisa<\/em><\/strong><\/font><\/a><font size=\"2\" color=\"#000000\"> (lion) figurines to <\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/okinawa.com\/heiwa_seasnake.JPG\"><font size=\"2\" color=\"#000000\"><strong>dried          sea snakes<\/strong><\/font><\/a><font size=\"2\" color=\"#000000\">. <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"4\" face=\"Arial,Helvetica\" color=\"#33ccff\"><strong>P<\/strong><\/font><font size=\"2\" face=\"Arial,Helvetica\" color=\"#000000\">erhaps my          fondest memories of Okinawa are of roaming the <\/font><font size=\"2\" face=\"Arial,Helvetica\" color=\"#3366ff\">endless          small roads and alleyways<\/font><font size=\"2\" face=\"Arial,Helvetica\" color=\"#000000\"> of Heiwa Dori.  It          is easy to get lost in the wonder of the countless shops          and vendors selling their <\/font><font size=\"2\" face=\"Arial,Helvetica\" color=\"#ff6666\">unique wares<\/font><font size=\"2\" face=\"Arial,Helvetica\" color=\"#000000\">.           Just about anything Okinawan can be found in Heiwa          Dori.  I would walk around aimlessly with <\/font><font size=\"2\" face=\"Arial,Helvetica\" color=\"#ffcc00\"><strong>wide-eyed          wonder<\/strong><\/font><font size=\"2\" face=\"Arial,Helvetica\" color=\"#000000\"> at the unusual commodities that          were on sale, wishing I could take this place back to          Hawaii with me. <\/font> <\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><font size=\"2\" face=\"Arial,Helvetica\" color=\"#000000\">Among the items on my shopping          list were: <\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/okinawa.com\/konbu.html\" target=\"new\"><font size=\"2\" face=\"Arial,Helvetica\" color=\"#000000\"><strong><em>konbu<\/em><\/strong><\/font><\/a><font size=\"2\" face=\"Arial,Helvetica\" color=\"#000000\">          (seaweed), <em>shitake <\/em>mushrooms, Okinawan herbal tea,          <em>okeiko gi<\/em> (practice kimono for Okinawan dance), Okinawan music CDs (Hidekatsu, Rinkin Band, Nenes, Ara Yukito, and traditional artists), <em>yosudake<\/em> (bamboo          castanets for Okinawan dance), Pokemon cards and <em>shisa<\/em>          figurines. <\/font><font size=\"2\" face=\"Arial,Helvetica\" color=\"#00cc00\"> I found all of them, and more, at          Heiwa Dori!<\/font> <\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">\n<p align=\"center\">\n<p align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.okinawa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/images\/images\/heiwa_tsukemono.JPG\" align=\"images\/heiwa-fugu1.JPG\" title=\"images\/heiwa-buta.JPG\" alt=\"images\/heiwa-buta.JPG\"\/>   <\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"> <font size=\"2\" face=\"Times New Roman,Times\" color=\"#000000\"><em>Tsukemono <\/em>(pickled vegetables) of all varieties can be found here.  Most of the vendors are more than happy to offer you a free sample!<\/font> <\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p align=\"center\"><font size=\"5\" face=\"Arial Narrow\" color=\"#33ccff\"><strong>a little too<\/strong><\/font><font size=\"5\" face=\"Arial Narrow\" color=\"#ff99ff\"><strong> <\/strong><\/font><font size=\"5\" face=\"Arial Narrow\" color=\"#cc0000\"><strong>e<\/strong><\/font><font size=\"5\" face=\"Arial Narrow\" color=\"#3366ff\"><strong>x<\/strong><\/font><font size=\"5\" face=\"Arial Narrow\" color=\"#ffcc00\"><strong>o<\/strong><\/font><font size=\"5\" face=\"Arial Narrow\" color=\"#33ff33\"><strong>t<\/strong><\/font><font size=\"5\" face=\"Arial Narrow\" color=\"#000000\"><strong>i<\/strong><\/font><font size=\"5\" face=\"Arial Narrow\" color=\"#cc33cc\"><strong>c <\/strong><\/font><font size=\"5\" face=\"Arial Narrow\" color=\"#33ccff\"><strong>for me!<\/strong><\/font>          <\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.okinawa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/images\/images\/heiwa-fugu1.JPG\" align=\"images\/heiwa-buta.JPG\" title=\"images\/heiwa-tebichi.JPG\" alt=\"images\/heiwa-tebichi.JPG\"\/>   <\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"> <font size=\"2\" color=\"#000000\">Above you          see a variety of fish, including the <\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/okinawa.com\/heiwa-fugu.JPG\"><font size=\"2\" color=\"#000000\"><strong><em>Fugu<\/em><\/strong><\/font><\/a><font size=\"2\" color=\"#000000\"><em> <\/em>(blowfish) which is          highly poisonous and can cause death if not prepared          properly.  <em>Fugu<\/em> is a delicacy in Japan and Okinawa, but unless you highly specialized training and knowledge for product preparation, I wouldn&#8217;t suggest attempting to cook it in your own kitchen.  Don&#8217;t try this at home, kids!<\/font> <\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.okinawa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/images\/images\/heiwa-buta.JPG\" align=\"images\/heiwa-tebichi.JPG\" title=\"images\/heiwa-soba.JPG\" alt=\"images\/heiwa-soba.JPG\"\/> <\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><font size=\"2\" color=\"#000000\">There is never a loss for pork dishes in Okinawa and you&#8217;ll soon find that they are very resourceful in using almost every part of the pig.  In this picture, you see in the package on the left is called <\/font><font size=\"2\" color=\"#cc33cc\"><em>Mimiga<\/em><\/font><font size=\"2\" color=\"#000000\"> (pig ears) and to the right is <\/font><font size=\"2\" color=\"#cc33cc\"><em>chiragaa<\/em><\/font><font size=\"2\" color=\"#000000\"> (pig&#8217;s head).  <em>Mimiga<\/em>          is actually quite good when prepared in a peanut butter          and <em>miso <\/em>(soybean paste) <\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/okinawa.com\/mimiga.html\" target=\"new\"><font size=\"2\" color=\"#000000\"><strong>sauce<\/strong><\/font><\/a><font size=\"2\" color=\"#000000\">, although I haven&#8217;t ventured as far as to try          any dishes prepared with pig&#8217;s head. <\/font> <\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.okinawa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/images\/images\/heiwa-tebichi.JPG\" align=\"images\/heiwa-soba.JPG\" title=\"\" alt=\"\"\/> <\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">  <font size=\"2\" color=\"#000000\">Your          visit to Okinawa would not be complete without having a          bowl of <\/font><font size=\"2\" color=\"#cc33cc\"><strong><em>Ashi          Tebichi<\/em><\/strong><\/font><font size=\"2\" color=\"#000000\">          (pig&#8217;s feet) soup. <\/font> <\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.okinawa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/images\/images\/heiwa-soba.JPG\" align=\"\" title=\"\" alt=\"\"\/>  <\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"> <font size=\"2\" color=\"#000000\">After you go          shopping for your uncooked <em>Ashi Tebichi <\/em>or fresh fish, you can bring it upstairs to have one of the many restaurants cook it for you!  If you prefer not to pick out your lunch from the <em>Machigwa<\/em>, you can          simply order a bowl of Okinawa <em>Soba <\/em>(noodle soup          in pork or beef-based broth with spareribs, green onions,          ginger, and fishcake)!<\/font><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Welcome to the Heiwa Dori (Peace Street) Machigwa (public marketplace)!
