{"id":173,"date":"2007-07-30T19:01:07","date_gmt":"2007-07-30T19:01:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.okinawa.com\/blog\/?p=173"},"modified":"2011-10-23T00:16:58","modified_gmt":"2011-10-23T00:16:58","slug":"itokazu-and-supporters-take-down-the-ldp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.okinawa.com\/blog\/uncategorized\/itokazu-and-supporters-take-down-the-ldp","title":{"rendered":"Itokazu and supporters take down the LDP"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Itokazu won a victory in the upper house elections, Sunday, July 29th.&nbsp; All over Japan, Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) incumbent&rsquo;s suffered defeat after defeat.&nbsp; This can be seen as a barometer of public sentiment, against the ruling party and especially their leader, Prime Minister Abe.&nbsp; National issues plaguing the LDP include a decades old recession, the LDP&rsquo;s push to amend the Macarthur inspired, Post WWII Japanese constitution to allow for more &lsquo;offensive&rsquo; postures to participate in the global war on terror.&nbsp; To top this off, various scandals continue to surface throughout government, even a number of Abe&rsquo;s own cabinet ministers have had forced resignations as well as one suicide.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>All this in addition to the Futemna air station realignment to Camp Scwab has yet to make any real progress.&nbsp; Okinawan overall sentiment was for Futenma&rsquo;s Air station to be completely removed from the prefecture.&nbsp; However, the LDP dominated government found a compromise with Nago City, and surveys continue (along with protesters doing their best to interfere and stop any progress wherever possible).&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p>What probably gave Itokazu the advantage in Sunday&rsquo;s elections was two-fold.&nbsp; First, she received prefecture wide exposure when she ran for the govener vacancy last fall.&nbsp; Then, under LDP Party leader and Prime Minister Abe&rsquo;s, &lsquo;Beautiful Japan&rsquo; patriotic campaign, a backlash occurred.&nbsp; There was a nationally mandated policy to &lsquo;revise&rsquo; the history books to show a &lsquo;more beautiful Japan&rsquo;.&nbsp; It became inconsistent with this policy to continue to include in Japanese textbooks the fact that Japanese soldiers during the battle of Okinawa regularly &lsquo;encouraged&rsquo; Okinawan civilians to commit suicide rather than to surrender to the Americans.&nbsp; This revision obviously upset Okinawan voters.&nbsp; Although the incumbent LDP&rsquo;s Upper House Representitive, Junshiro Nishime was also opposed to the WWII retraction from textbooks, his campaign paid the price for the Prime Ministers and central government policies.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Itokazu won a victory in the upper house elections, Sunday, July 29th.&nbsp; All over Japan, Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) incumbent&rsquo;s suffered defeat after defeat.&nbsp; This can be seen as a barometer of public sentiment, against the ruling party and especially &hellip; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.okinawa.com\/blog\/uncategorized\/itokazu-and-supporters-take-down-the-ldp\">Continue reading <span class=\"meta-nav\">&rarr;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":111,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"ngg_post_thumbnail":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-173","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.okinawa.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/173","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.okinawa.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.okinawa.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.okinawa.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/111"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.okinawa.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=173"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/www.okinawa.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/173\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":494,"href":"https:\/\/www.okinawa.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/173\/revisions\/494"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.okinawa.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=173"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.okinawa.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=173"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.okinawa.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=173"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
