Within an hour or so of Naha you’ll find seaside shopping and sunsets in Chatan, resort beaches and dramatic capes on the Onna coast, UNESCO-listed castle ruins, and a road across the sea to a string of quiet islands.

Overview

This region stretches roughly from Ginowan and Chatan north to Onna on the west coast, and across to the Katsuren Peninsula and Uruma on the east. It’s also home to large US military bases, which give towns like Chatan and Okinawa City (Koza) an international flavor you won’t find elsewhere in Japan.

The west coast is the classic resort area, with beaches, dive shops, and big hotels. The east coast is quieter and more local, with mangroves, fishing harbors, and islands linked by bridges.

Best Time to Visit

Beach season runs from around April to October, when the sea is warm enough for most swimmers and summer highs often reach 31–32°C (88–90°F). Late June to early July, after the rainy season ends, is usually bright and sunny. Winter is mild, around 20–22°C (68–72°F) in the daytime, and good for sightseeing, castle visits, and sunsets. Okinawa City hosts its big Eisa festival in late summer. See the best time to visit Okinawa.

Getting There

From Naha Airport, Mihama American Village in Chatan is about 20 km (12 mi) away, or 35–45 minutes by car. Cape Manzamo in Onna is about 50 km (31 mi) away, or about 55 minutes using the Okinawa Expressway. Katsuren Castle on the east coast is around 35 km (22 mi), or about an hour. Airport limousine buses and regular route buses also serve the main resort areas.

Getting Around

A rental car is the most practical way to explore central Okinawa, especially the castles and the islands on the east side. Route 58 runs up the west coast and can be congested around Chatan and Ginowan at rush hour. Buses link Naha with Chatan and the Onna coast, but services to smaller sights are limited. Its most famous sight is Cape Manzamo, a grassy clifftop with a rock formation often compared to an elephant’s trunk. Farther south, the Blue Cave at Cape Maeda is one of Okinawa’s most popular snorkeling and diving spots; tours run when the sea is calm. From there, bridges continue to Miyagi, Ikei, and Hamahiga islands. Hamahiga is home to sacred sites linked to Okinawa’s creation legends; please visit them quietly. Many resort beaches on the Onna coast have changing rooms, showers, lifeguards in season, and jellyfish nets during summer. Public beaches in Chatan and Yomitan are free and popular with locals for barbecues on weekends. Always swim in patrolled areas where possible and watch for currents near reefs. Our beach guide lists favorites across the island.

Traditional Culture in Onna

For a taste of old Okinawa, Ryukyu Mura in Onna is a theme park built around traditional houses moved from around the island. Visitors can watch performances such as Eisa, try crafts, and see how people lived in the days of the Ryukyu Kingdom. It’s a good rainy-day option for families.

A Note on the Bases

US military facilities cover a large part of central Okinawa, and you’ll drive past long stretches of fenced land. The bases are a sensitive and complex issue for many Okinawans, linked to the history of the war and the long postwar US administration. Along the Onna coast, look for seafood restaurants and casual cafés with sea views. Small local shokudo and Okinawa soba shops are everywhere, and it’s worth seeking out sata andagi doughnuts and mozuku seaweed dishes. It’s well placed for day trips both south to Naha and north to the Churaumi Aquarium, and it has the island’s biggest choice of resort hotels.

Can I visit the Blue Cave on my own?

Most visitors join a guided snorkeling or diving tour, which is the safer option. Conditions change quickly, and tours may be cancelled in rough seas.

Which castle should I visit if I only have time for one?

Nakagusuku for its stonework, or Katsuren for its views. Both are UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Is central Okinawa easy to reach by bus?

Main routes link Naha with Chatan and the Onna coast, but services are slower and less frequent than in big Japanese cities.
